School Opening Plan and Protocols for School Year 2020-2021

English Letter - Spanish Letter

July 14, 2020

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On July 13, 2020, school district superintendents throughout the county met with Dr. Julie Vaishampayan, Stanislaus County Public Health Officer. Dr. Vaishampayan provided an update on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and recent community spread, and determined the guidelines for K-12 education moving forward.

The following determinations were made by Dr. Vaishampayan:

  • Schools should open in August with a Distance Learning Model
  • All conditioning for fall sports are suspended until further notice
  • Extracurricular activities (i.e. band, sports, theater/drama, etc.) are also suspended until further notice

Widespread community transmission has forced us to make the difficult decision to delay the return of our children to school classrooms. This announcement represents a significant disappointment for our teachers, administrators and support staff, who were looking forward to welcoming students back in August.

I realize you are all facing both personal and professional challenges with the COVID situation, and I am asking all of our staff to help guide our students and families through the uncertainty we are facing over the next several months. We are in the process of setting up individual meetings with parents and students to ready our families for our new distance learning guidelines. During the meetings, you will be able to meet with the classroom teacher and/or administration to receive your device and information on how to access the curriculum and the live interactive instructional meetings.

SUSD continues to remain focused on protecting the health and safety of our students, parents and staff.  In the future, once State and Public Health Officials begin to identify a downward trend in hospitalizations and confirmed cases of COVID infections, schools may start to reopen in a phased approach.

It is important that we do our part to reduce the spread of the disease in our community. Thank you for your continued understanding as we navigate this uncertain situation. Stay safe in the community.

Sincerely,

Twila Tosh
Superintendent
